Update 8/7: Sandi passed away the evening of Friday 8/4 surrounded by her loving husband and sons. Our hearts are heavy but we are happy she is no longer in pain. Her Celebration of life will be held at Faith Lutheran Church on 8/19. 11:00 Family Visitation, 12:00 Funeral Service, with luncheon to follow. Faith Lutheran Church Address: 11115 Hanson Blvd NW, Coon Rapids, MN 55433 Update 7/25: The time has come to limit Sandi's visitors to family only. She appreciates everyone who has visited, loved and supported her but her body is very tired and needs more rest. If you have messages you want to pass on to her, letters and cards are always appreciated or you can send me a message/DM on Facebook and I will gladly get it to Sandi & Bruce. The family appreciates your understanding and support. Update: Sandi will be moved from Mercy Hospital to J.A. Wedum Residential Hospice in Brooklyn Park on Saturday 7/22. We have increased our goal, the facility fee is $18,000 per month. Hi, I'm Kristi Gloppen, Sandi's lifelong friend. Sandi was diagnosed with Stage 3 Rectal cancer about a year ago. She completed chemo, radiation and surgery. The surgery was a little more extensive than expected but we were all thrilled that the majority of the cancer was out of her. However, it wasn't long before she developed an infection and had to have a drain put in. The drain caused excruciating pain. Pain meds and ice did not provide relief. She struggled with pain for months while she recovered from surgery. Unfortunately, when she went in for her next round of scans, they found that the cancer has metastasized throughout her abdomen. At that point, they told her she had 3-5 years to live and she started stronger chemo. Always faithful and hopeful she moved forward with the attitude that she could still beat this. Last week the pain got so severe that she could no longer walk. Her husband Bruce got her to ER. After a lot of scans and tests, they found that she has a flesh-eating bacteria that has spread through her bum and down one leg. Normally they would do surgery to cut out the bacteria. However, based on the chemo and cancer, they cannot do any surgery. They have told her there is nothing else they can do for her now and the next step will be to move from the hospital to hospice. She cannot do hospice at home because she doesn't have any mobility. She had a blood transfusion and is being given strong antibiotics and pain meds to keep her as comfortable as possible. Once she is stable enough and can take meds orally, she will be moved. We do not know where she will be for hospice yet. Sandi's care in the hospital is covered and hospice care should be covered. However, the hospice facility is not covered and her family will need to cover those costs. Sandi has not been out on disability for quite some time. Please help in any way you can.
