Many of you know, but for those of you who do not, earlier this year Rodney Scott was diagnosed with high-risk multiple myeloma. For Rodney, Christmas 2024 came and went and 2024 started like any other year. Aside from some age-related back soreness, Rodney was in reasonably good health. It was actually a shoulder injury that prompted Rodney to go to the doctor. What he thought was a shoulder injury was actually related to the back soreness and a biopsy revealed multiple myeloma. Chemotherapy began along with radiation to palliate the intense pain he was experiencing. The treatment proved to be doing its job and Rodney was referred to Northwestern for a stem cell transplant. This life-saving treatment requires Rodney to have his stem cells harvested, or removed, from his blood using a special machine. The stem cell harvest is scheduled to begin July 31st and will require a week-long stay in Chicago for the daily harvest procedure. Rodney will return to Northwestern on August 10th for chemotherapy followed by an infusion that will return his stem cells to him with the goal that they “take root” in his bone marrow and flourish. This time, Rodney will be hospitalized for 2-3 weeks for close monitoring. Rodney is doing remarkably well and is thankful for the opportunity to receive a life-saving stem cell transplant. Post discharge, the aftercare will require frequent trips to Northwestern to monitor his condition. This illness, its treatment and ongoing medical care can certainly create stress and financial concerns. Despite being an independent soul, early in his cancer treatment Rodney was reminded that “people will want to help you and you need to let them”. If you are a friend, co-worker or relative and want to help, please consider a financial contribution. These funds will help with various travel, housing and medical expenses related to Rodney’s cancer treatment.
