Hi, my name is Kandice Bowman and I am fundraising for my amazing dear brother Rick Kindell who just underwent a heart transplant at Stanford University Hospital. Rick's heart has a genetic mutation that causes dilated cardiomyopathy ( DCM) and severe heart rhythm problems that can cause cardiac arrest. For the past 15 years, Rick's heart has slowly worsened. He has had an internal defibrillator implanted that has managed to save his life multiple times, although according to Rick it feels "kind of like a horse hitting you in the chest". Last month his heart had multiple events of a life-threatening heart rhythm that would have caused cardiac arrest if not for his internal defibrillator. His heart finally required continuous IV medication to prevent life-threatening rhythms, and Rick was transferred to Stanford Hospital from his home in Sacramento, California to await a transplant. My brother has had many challenges in life but always faced them with an unwavering smile and a positive attitude. He was determined to work hard in life and give back to others, so he became a Certified Nursing Assistant ( CNA)to care for the elderly. His sense of humor has always been one of his inner strengths for him and those around him, as well as his faith in God. Until recently, he has been working for the same nursing home for over 21 years and was sad when he was forced to quit due to his heart condition. My brother's dedication to caring for residents in the nursing home has always been very important to him. One notable story is when the nursing home had a serious fire and the smoke created a very dangerous situation before the fire department arrived. My brother risked his safety by placing wet towels over his head, going back into the building and rescuing two residents that were unable to reach safety on their own He was awarded a hero's award for his bravery in helping with his rescue of the residents. He is that kind of person who is always willing to help others and always with a smile. Rick's long-term partner tragically died several years ago, so myself and his siblings will be taking care of him during his recovery. He also has a sweet dog Peppy who gives him lots of love and companionship. I am lucky to be retired so that I can be his caregiver during his long recovery. Funds raised through LFEBridge will help tremendously to cover the variety of costs incurred during his hospitalization, including out-of-pocket medical costs and also maintaining a required residence within 30 minutes of the hospital once he is discharged. We are told to expect around 3 months before he would be able to leave the area. I live in Portland Oregon and will need to also live at said accommodation while Rick is recovering, As most people are aware the area around Stanford Hospital is infamous for its high cost of living. Rick has recently been fortunate enough to receive a new heart. He is now recovering in the intensive care unit. We are so thankful for all the amazing staff that are taking excellent care of our brother. Our family wants to thank everyone for any support you can offer during Rick's heart transplant recovery.
