Hi, my name is Franchesca (Franny), anyone who knows me knows how much I love my fur child Cocopuff. He is a 12 year old Chihuahua Yorkie mix. He is a bit of a spicy boy but he's just under 4 lbs so he's more bark than bite and it's one of the things i love most about him. He has been blessed with a healthy life with very few issues up until 7/16/23. While attempting to groom him (one of the few things he dislikes) he injured his jaw to where it's either dislocated or completely broken. His mouth won't close and the lower jaw is hanging down low on the left side. I took him to my local emergency veterinarian with not much luck other than being able to obtain some pain medication for him. They were kind enough to call one of the 2 specialists that would be able to provide the surgery he needs. The place located in NYC quoted us $6,000-$8,000. I broke down crying. The other specialist is located in Red Bank NJ, I wasn't able to obtain a quote but they were able to tell me that just for a visit and surgical consultation that would run me over 500$. They are over an hour away from me. I am feeling quite defeated at the moment because I obviously don't have that kind of money. ***UPDATE*** On Monday afternoon I spoke to the emergency vet who had quoted us the NYC locations fee and asked if she could contact the Red Bank veterinary hospital to see if she could get a quote for me there since I wasn't successful. She was kind enough to not only call back with a lower quote of 5 to 6,000$ but she spoke with a doctor willing to take Cocopuffs case. I was instructed to just show up overnight (preferably before 6am because that's when the surgeon's arrive) it would help everything just flow smoothly and instead of being there a day or 2 it could be less total time in the hospital and would possibly result in a smaller bill. I wasted no time and was able to locate someone to drive me over an hour from home to the hospital and they were kind enough to stay with me until they took Cocopuff into surgery. We got to the hospital after 1am. They were short staffed and it took about an hr and a half to be seen by a technician. Coco was given right back to me I was told his vitals were great and he'd stay with me until the doctor could see him. My ride went to sleep in the car and I stayed in the lobby with Cocopuff. I was woken up around 345 am and told the doctor would see coco now. I cried as I handed him off again. I sat alone and cried myself to sleep. I was awakend about 30 to 40 min later. The doctor called me to her office. She said Cocopuff is pretty healthy and his vitals were great for his age. She questioned me again as to how he obtained his injury and if he was able to eat on his own.I told her yes he was eating his kibble and I mic steamed mashed carrots and peas into his kibble and he seemed to be ok eating it. And even drank some water like normal even tho i was still giving him water via syringe just to make sure he was getting his daily water intake. She basically concluded that Cocopuff wasn't an emergency because he was able to still eat on his own. But she did recommend surgery to fix his jaw. I explained to her that my emergency vet had called earlier and got me a 5-6,000$ quote and someone willing to take his case . We were told to just come in and that they would know what to do. She said she doesn't know who we spoke to that would quote this surgery at 5,000$ that they have never done this type of surgery for that low. Especially because he will be needing a CT scan and that's about 1000$ on its own. She quoted me 7000$ the least and I broke down crying. But I still wanted to go thru with the surgery and she stops me to tell me the hospital required 75% up front which is (5,250$). I started crying again because I had about 1,000 in my savings and had just created the go fund me. I asked if there was any payment plans she said no but she was kind enough to not charge me for my visit that day which would have cost around 500$ I felt defeated. I spent so much time and I felt so bad for my ride to have taken me all the way here to not have anything done. We're back at square one. Now the money is even more urgent than before because they won't even touch him without at least 5,250$ I have been giving him water and pain medication via syringe to make sure he is as hydrated and pain free as can be. He is such a good and strong boy doing the best he can because he sees how distraught I am. I am the type of person who will give to anyone in need even if I don't necessarily have it. But I never ask for help, if this was an emergency for myself, I would stay shut and deal with it on my own. But Coco is my baby and the love of my life and for this, I have no shame in asking for help. If you've ever interacted with him, you'd understand the special magic that my baby possesses. He truly is one of a kind. Whatever you can find in your hearts to donate, Coco and I really appreciate it. I love you all for taking time to read this and thank you in advance for everything. With love, Franny and Cocopuff
