My mum, Cassie, has an extremely rare and deadly superbug destroying her lungs and we need your help to fight this disease. My name is Bella Anderson, I am 26 and sharing my mums story, not for pity but to support my incredibly brave mum and to help win this war against her superbug. Mum’s disease is an aggressive bacterial infection that is resistant to antibiotics. It is attacking and destroying both of her lungs and there is no known cure. Since her diagnosis in 2019, mum has continuously been in and out of hospital, undergoing many rounds of experimental treatments, none of which are yet to work. When not in hospital, she requires home nursing every single day, with a permanent IV in her arm administering a cocktail of antibiotics 24/7. This current treatment is only slowing the disease’s progression and preventing other serious lung infections. As a result, mum is unable to work, and the financial burden of her illness has become overwhelming and insurmountable. The road ahead will be challenging and severely complicated as we wait for clinical trials, mum will continue to go in and out of hospital and undergo daily treatment. I’m launching this fundraiser, to help my family pay for mum’s ongoing medical expenses, treatment costs, hospital procedures and hopefully fund an upcoming clinical trial (being developed by a team of specialists at the University of Pittsburgh in America) at Westmead Hospital. If we can’t afford to continue down this road, we would have no other alternatives and mum would then move to palliative care. Mum survived breast cancer in 2017 and not only is the strongest and toughest woman I know but she still, somehow, has the positivity, optimism and courage to believe in miracles. I’m not ready for mum to die and I need her to undergo more treatment so she can see my brother and I get married and become a grandmother. I can’t lose my best friend. This is my way of helping her win this fight and to alleviate some of her stresses. We need her to survive this. We need our mum in our lives. Your support, be it through a financial donation, sharing this link or simply sending your thoughts and prayers, means the world to us and we cannot thank you enough. Thank you for reading mum’s story. #phageaustralia https://www.smh.com.au/national/millions-of-people-are-battling-superbugs-what-happens-when-the-drugs-don-t-work-20240430-p5d4d2.html https://www.pitt.edu/pittwire/features-articles/pitt-researchers-led-largest-ever-series-bacteriophage-therapy-case-studies https://www.pitt.edu/pittwire/features-articles/bacteria-killing-viruses-antibiotic-resistant-infection
