Hi, my name is Tricia... I’ve never done this before, and I’m hesitant to even do it now…but this year has been medically challenging for my 28-year-old daughter Amy, who has been disabled since birth. She has a lot of unexpected medical expenses. Amy is a certified Music Therapist who works full-time for a non-profit in Phoenix, AZ, a career path she followed after many years of medical intervention for her spina bifida. Her salary mostly covers her day-to-day living but doesn’t leave much left over to manage a seemingly perfect storm of medical and adaptive equipment expenses. This year alone, she’s had expenses for carpal tunnel surgery on her left wrist that required 2 weeks off from work; a new wheelchair with a power assist unit; new ankle-foot orthotics (AFOs); and modifications to her car to add hand controls and a wheelchair lift. She is also scheduled for a second carpal tunnel surgery before the end of the year, which will mean more time off work. All of these expenses in just one year are more than she can feasibly handle. Her income is just above the threshold for any grants or subsidies she’s looked into. Anyone who knows Amy knows that she is fiercely independent. She makes her own way in the world, despite her disability. And she hates to ask for help! Which is why I decided to ask for her. When Amy was younger, her dad and I managed her medical needs between our health insurance and our savings. Some years it wasn’t easy but we managed. Amy is on her own now, living in a different city from us and building a life of her own. While she has medical insurance, it is a high-deductible policy w/ a 20% copay for covered expenditures. Some things aren’t covered, like the hand controls and wheelchair lift for her car. Those two items carry a $5000 price tag all on their own. If you’ve made it this far, thank you for taking the time to read Amy’s story. If you choose to help in any way, Amy, her dad and I, greatly appreciate it. All money raised will be distributed to Amy to pay her medical bills and cover the cost of installing hand controls and a wheelchair lift in her car. Any funds that are raised above the requested amount will be used to cover future medical expenses. Thank you from a grateful mom who still wants to take care of her daughter, no matter how grown-up and independent she may be ~ Tricia
