Hi, my name is Nicole Weir, on Saturday August 26th myself and 14 other riders are taking part in the Pat Smullen charity race in aid of cancer trials Ireland. Cancer is a horrible illness that takes a toll on all members of the family and friends, when one family member is suffering with the disease. I myself am riding in the race to represent my grandfather who was diagnosed with Melodysplastic Syndromes also known as (MDS), which is a rare form blood and bone cancer. Unfortunately due to other complications with his health chemo wasn’t an option and he fights everyday with any battle that gets thrown at him. At the moment I spend most of my evenings in the St Bridget’s hospice on the Curragh also known as the old jockey hospital for our chats and a cuppa as he’s in there for pain management . It is an amazing facility, where he is looked after very well and is much loved by all the staff with his bubbly personality. My grandad means a lot to me as without him horse racing would have never been possible for me and he is definitely my biggest supporter but also my biggest criticiser! I hope that my fundraising achievements can make a difference to many of these lives and with the great work of cancer trials Ireland the donations raised can help all the families going through this devastating disease. Any donations are very much appreciated big or small can go a long way.
