This fundraiser is for our dear friend, Gretta Calvert. She is a pillar of strength in the Las Vegas sobriety community and a beacon of hope in so many ways. Her heart is as big as her personality and most importantly she is a friend. Gretta is currently enduring the fight of her life, after being diagnosed with Neuroendocrine tumors. Neuroendocrine tumors are cancers that begin in specialized cells called neuroendocrine cells. Neuroendocrine tumors are rare and can occur anywhere in the body. Most neuroendocrine tumors occur in the lungs, appendix, small intestine, rectum and pancreas. We recently found that her cancer has progressed to multiple organs and systems in her body, such as her lymph nodes, ovary and possibly stomach. Which only happens in 1% of NET patients. Gretta happens to be in this 1 percent. The pain and discomfort she feels can be excruciating and she has since been told that given her health situation, a return to work in the near future is not recommended, or possible. An application for disability was initially denied and is pending a recent appeal, and with the uncertainty of extensive coverage being provided by insurance, it has left a lot of worry whether or not future treatments will be covered. Between medical expenses, treatment, traveling from Las Vegas to St. George, UT for doctors consults, treatments and specialists - the bills stack up quickly and this is one less thing our friend Gretta need be concerned with at this time in her life. As friends of hers we can be that pillar of strength she needs right now and that beacon of hope she so often is to so many people, because even with Stage 4 cancer she still finds the time and ability to suit up and show up for so many of us. The rarity of her diagnosis means there may be many unforeseen expenses in the very near future and she has at least 1 more critical surgery on the horizon.
