My uncle, Pete, is grappling with significant health challenges. He was diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis several years ago. In December 2024, he experienced a critical hypoxic episode, leading to a diagnosis of Severe Pulmonary Hypertension, rendering him oxygen-dependent and causing cardiomyopathy. This year, he encountered breathing difficulties and was admitted to St. Elizabeth Hospital on June 11, 2024, following an extended battle with pneumonia. He was discharged on June 16, 2024. Unfortunately, his health deteriorated, resulting in readmission on June 22, 2024, due to an altered mental state, the cause of which eluded diagnosis and was attributed to his illness. He was released again on June 28, 2024.   Subsequently, Pete's mental state continued to decline, leading to another admission on July 8, 2024. Despite extensive testing, the only notable result was a diagnosis of Lyme disease. Treatment for suspected Autoimmune Encephalitis yielded limited improvement. He was released on July 25th but was unable to find placement in skilled nursing homes due to his need for a Bi-Pap machine. On July 27th, Pete experienced a sudden loss of mobility and other issues, prompting his readmission to St. Elizabeth's Hospital. His perplexing condition continues to baffle medical experts, with ongoing mental deterioration.   On July 29th, he was transferred to Westchester hospital. He is slated for further comprehensive testing, including an MRI under anesthesia to investigate the inflammation observed in his brain. This is crucial to rule out a cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak and gain insights into his condition. Additionally, anesthetized CSF fluid extraction is planned, if feasible. Specialized tests are in the pipeline. A chest CT scan is scheduled to explore lung involvement, potentially linked to the pneumonia's origin.   It's important to note that Surrogate Decision Makers, as authorized by two doctors, are currently overseeing decisions on Pete's behalf due to his compromised state. This arrangement ensures the best interests of his health until he regains capacity.   This LFEBridge campaign seeks to alleviate the burden of medical expenses and the substantial travel and accommodation costs incurred by Pete's family, who must journey a considerable distance and contend with high-priced lodging due to the location. Your contribution, no matter the amount, would be invaluable and greatly appreciated.   Pete's Update: Yesterday, an attempted LP procedure proved unsuccessful under anesthesia, as a sample could not be obtained. Subsequent to this, the head of neurology provided an update. An EEG indicated slow brain waves, signifying brain inflammation. The cause of this remains uncertain. Collaboration with the medical team is planned for an MRI under anesthesia on Monday. This step is crucial to address concerns including CSF leakage and overall brain condition. Subsequent anesthesia-assisted CSF fluid extraction is also on the horizon, contingent on the absence of leaks. Specialized tests are in the pipeline. A chest CT scan is planned to investigate potential lung involvement in light of the initial pneumonia. It's noteworthy that Surrogate Decision Makers are presently overseeing decisions, ensuring Pete's well-being during this challenging period
