My name is Tracy and many of you know that Emilia is the closest person I have to a sibling. Emilia's loving father tragically passed away, joining his parents, on July 13, 2024. The past couple of weeks have been a nightmare for Emilia's family, I won't sugarcoat it. Her dad, Nicolas Depalo, was diagnosed with cancer in early July, just a couple of weeks ago. Emilia immediately flew out to Cerda, Italy where her mother is from and where her parents have been living since they moved from Ridgewood, New Jersey in 2024. She advocated for her father and tried to get him the best public medical care there. He was in the hospital for a week in Italy while they did tests and pain management, and was hoping to be able to start radiation the week of July 10th. Emilia came back to the US but soon after it quickly became apparent that her father needed immediate, specialized care that he was just not able to get in or near their small town in Italy. Emilia bought both of her parents first-class plane tickets as their best chance to quickly and safely get to the US for an emergency admission at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where Emilia had previously worked for nearly ten years. On his layover to the US on July 11th, he had a medical emergency in Paris and was not stable enough to fly, so he was taken to a hospital that was honestly not capable of helping him. Emilia immediately then flew out to Paris to be with her mother and father at the hospital. She was essentially his nurse there, having to administer his pain medications because the hospital basically neglected him. He passed away and was relieved of his pain with Emilia and her mother at his side on July 13th. Emilia has used all of her savings and is pulling out of her retirement to pay for all of the travel costs, medical costs, and now funeral costs.
