Hi -- I'm Kim (DOAS) and I would like to ask you to help our friend, Matt Green (TD). Matt has had diabetes for several years. Of late, it has become more and more difficult for him to manage. Matt has volunteered his time for many years with the Ramsey County Sheriff's Dive Team. Matt is always there when you need him -- he shows up for moves, at birthday parties, at grad parties. He's always offered his home for gatherings, and makes sure those who need a place to sleep (it off???!!!) feel welcome. He's known for his quick wit, but also for his somewhat cynical viewpoints. He's an excellent conversationalist as most smart people are. He's got an amazing talent for recalling parts of history, parts of movies, parts of books. He's always up for something fun (tho sometimes you have to coax him out), and he's well-loved by his friends. A short time ago, Matt landed his dream job with the Minneapolis Police Department. Two days into the job, he passed out in his garage and had to be rescued by St. Paul Police and Fire Departments. He was admitted to the hospital. At that time he was told his diabetes was severely out of control, and that the foot that had been sore had to be amputated. Matt is dealing with very brittle diabetes, post-amputation infections, and unemployment. He has been paying for his own medical insurance for a while. The cost of insulin is unbelievable. Now he will also have hospitalization and surgery costs. The process is underway to get him on disability and some more affordable health care. However, until that time, his bills are amassing and his income is zero. His family has been tireless with their contributions of time and effort. He's had his bathroom somewhat retrofitted, but will need a more extensive overhaul. His kitchen has been shifted around but will need modifications as well. His laundry is in the basement so the plan would be to move it upstairs. The hope is that he will be fitted for a prosthetic in the near future. However, the post-operative infections are not helping to move towards that goal. He's been hospitalized several times since the surgery to deal with his leg wound. Diabetics have a harder time healing, and Matt is no exception. Matt would also like to let everyone know that he's always up for a visit, a phone call, or a text. He's battling loneliness and some depression. He could use a smiling face or a happy voice on the phone.
