Hi, I’m raising funds to buy a new wheelchair motor. Costs: •Motor + shipping — $6,895.00 The motor here Video of it being used here •Installation costs — unknown •Extra funds to pay for dog walker/Uber while I’m without a functioning wheelchair What Happened The subway trains don’t always align with the platform so I had to jump the equivalent of a step down in my wheelchair. When I did that my motor was ejected off and upon realizing this I tried to get back on the train to grab it and the doors closed — and off it went into New York City. Immediately, I went to speak with an attendant but after an hour of the transit authority searching the train, nothing was found. I also filed a police report hoping it will turn up, but they said odds are unclear. Working with medical insurance is not reliable as an option. I have already been trying to get a new wheelchair motor for over a year now but devices like this are not classified as medically necessary and takes time to get, often without success for many depending on their insurance. Without my motor, I’m simply unable to move. I’m home bound. This obviously impacts me in every way being stuck inside. The old motor vs. the new one: My now former motor while life changing has many design flaws including how it attaches to my wheelchair. The new one is made by a different company and resolves that issue and it has been praised for its reliability and design. Why I am asking for help: I was laid off and times are tough and I already have higher associated costs of living to have an accessible home. Costs for disabled people are higher on average by 29% percent than the average median income. Factor in tough times like this job market and economy, the implications are huge. It’s hard asking for help when you’re always having to prove your independence to people. Still I’m only as independent as my devices and environment allow me and with this blow I’m at zero. We live in a country that comparatively to other western democracies has a medical system that makes it impossible and/or lengthy to get new products unless you pay out of pocket. As my focus is getting gainful employment again, I’m asking for your support to support my physical mobility which in turn will help me get closer to employment again ie. Get to interviews, mental health, etc. Once I have work again, I would like to work with each donor to see how I can pay it forward out of gratitude. Thank you.
