On Friday, June 30, Lily was walking her dogs on a bike path in Homer, Alaska where her family was on vacation. The path is next to a two-lane road and is separated from the road by 5-10 feet of grass. A car crossed a lane of traffic and veered off the road and struck her (going 40 mph) and killed one of her dogs (Willow, a golden retriever). The other dog is fine. Her parents hadn't heard from her in 2 hours (long walks were normal for her!) so they called her phone. The police answered and said she was in the ER. The only road into the Homer Spit (a long, narrow finger of land that juts 4 miles into Kachemak Bay) was blocked off and backed up for miles because of the accident so Lily's parents jumped on their bicycles and rode up to the accident scene. A police officer drove them to the ER where they kept Lily for a couple of hours until they could med-evac her by helicopter to Anchorage (and her family drove 5 hours up there to be with her). Lily spent two weeks in the hospital in Anchorage with four surgeries and initial physical therapy to help her get well enough to fly back home to Arkansas. Now that she is back home, she's looking at physical and occupational therapy and follow-up appointments for traumatic brain injury and the many broken bones. She's also set to begin her senior year at the University of Arkansas as a Graphic Design major.
