This could happen to anyone, any day, at any time. On March 21, 2024 Jada’s husband Tom left for work just like every other Monday. When he arrived , he realized there was something wrong. He managed to make it to his desk and asked a colleague to call 911 and was transported to a local hospital. As Jada was getting ready to head out to her job, she got a call from Tom saying “They think I’ve had a stroke” . She left in a panic and rushed to his side to learn that he had, indeed , had a stroke. Neither of them, nor their son, could have imagined how much life would change. The news they got wasn’t the worst, but it wasn’t great. Tom wouldn’t be able to return to work, and he would need someone to help him with daily life skills - things like dressing, bathing, preparing meals, and getting to and from appointments. he would need specialized medical equipment and a handicapped friendly home. Over the past 18 months, life has been a roller coaster for this family. So many hours spent in hospitals and rehab centers , return visits after falls and relapses, speaking with doctors, learning how to care for Tom, and what things might look like for his future, while daily life went on. They were amassing huge medical expenses, while the monthly bills we all contend with kept coming in, and less hours were able to be spent at work. Not only was Tom a hard worker, and a DIY guy who loved woodworking, he was the main breadwinner- his paycheck and benefits covered the mortgage, health insurance, car payments, utilities, groceries and their sons schooling. Jada’s income covered things like cell phones, date nights, vacations, TV. Now they were faced with a college aged son attending school and Jada with one part time job, as Tom’s needs prevent her from working full time. After trying to catch up and cutting all the corners she can, Jada is drowning. The excess medical bills, necessary home modifications, and daily expenses are spiraling out of control. She just needs a little help friends. Just a leg up to get on top of things. Not having to choose which bill to pay this week because she has to send a payment towards past expenses would feel like a miracle. What I’m asking for is a drop in the bucket, but it’s a drop that would make a huge difference in this family’s life.
