Hi, my name is Jocelyn Lewis and I'm fundraising for my husband's best friend, Leon Woolford. Sadly, Leon passed away in the early morning of Thursday, August 10. The family could use your prayers and financial support. In August of 2016, Leon was placed on dialysis due to acute kidney failure from an allergic reaction to the contrast dye during a CT scan for injuries sustained during an accident. As you may be aware, the kidneys love the heart and the heart loves the brain. Leon was doing fine managing his dialysis at home after working all day and caring for his family - his wife, Koreen; son Eddie and daughter Octavia. Then COVID struck. Leon found himself afflicted and battling COVID in the ICU. He recovered and returned to work but the damage was done. Fast forward to Feb. 2024, Leon's health took a turn for the worse where he suffered a heart attack and a mild stroke, which left him with some residual deficits. Determined to get well, Leon recovered and returned to work for American Airlines to the best of his ability. He knew that his family was depending on his income and his health needed the benefits offered through employment. Unfortunately, his health has taken another turn and he is now unable to work. He is hospitalized having had another heart attack and requires heart surgery. He is only 47 years old. He cannot work and the bills are mounting. His health insurance alone is $679 per month as an out-of-pocket expense. His rent, car insurance, and utilities amount to nearly $2500 per month and that's without considering groceries or any other basic needs. Leon has 2 kids in college - Octavia is in her second year at UNC-Charlotte studying psychology and Eddie just started at NC Central majoring in business. These funds will be used to sustain their housing and basic needs of food, water/electricity and shelter. He will need a full-time caregiver when he returns home and his wife, Koreen is prepared to continue in this role but without an income, life will be challenging. No donated amount is too small. Anything would be a big help. Update: 8/8 - Leon's doctors have decided that surgery would be too risky. They are doing everything possible to stabilize him and transfer him to rehab. Update: 8/9 - Leon's blood pressure at this point is being maintained by medications. The family certainly solicits your prayers. Update 8/10: Leon passed away at 153AM. We are in a deep loss as we process through next steps. His wife, Koreen and his children Marqeas, Eddie, Octavia as well as his parents will need your prayers more than ever. Thank you all who have contributed financially and those who desire to do so. The funds continue to be directed to support the ongoing expenses that will now exist in his absence. Update: 8/11 - His body has been donated to Wake Forest University Anatomical Gift Program. His mother is planning a memorial service with details TBD.
