Dear Community — We are writing to ask your support for a family several of us at CDT have befriended for many years. The family is from Ecuador and they just moved to Boston to get medical care for their child. Their thirteen-year-old son has a rare, degenerative neuromuscular disorder called Charcot Marie Tooth disease. Over the five years we’ve known the family (some of you may remember that they were also here for six months in 2018), the child went from walking with braces to being wheelchair bound. He also has substantial weakness in his arms and hands and severe scoliosis. He is scheduled for a major spinal surgery at Boston Children’s this September. The family sold everything to move here because there is no adequate care for their child available in Ecuador. They are working with an attorney to apply for a deferred medical action Visa which will allow them to remain and work legally in the United States for two years (renewable biannually thereafter). We are writing because they need $4,000 to cover even the very discounted fees needed for their Visa case. We know there are many urgent needs but we hope you will consider contributing to this as you are able. The family has been amazingly resilient and resourceful and anyone who has met them can attest to their warmth, courage and grace. The family is currently living with Laura Schulz and Susan Kaufman. The family has no permanent housing or other means of support so every contribution is enormously valuable. (And if you have suggestions for housing or know anyone who might be able to provide rooms in exchange for live-in help and maintenance work, please let us know.) Thank you so much for your generosity. Warmly, Laura Schulz, Susan Kaufman, Linda Kramer and Steve Zisk
