In early June, my fiancée, Lindsay, was diagnosed with early stage cancer and next week will be traveling to Memorial Sloan Kettering in Manhattan for surgery on Wednesday, July 26th. We won't know until after the surgery is complete if the cancer has spread to other locations. As the sole employee of a tiny non-profit, her health insurance - a Platinum plan she already pays $450 a month for - doesn't cover critical illness care or any of the costs associated with traveling out of the area to receive treatment. Since we're not married and don't currently cohabitate, she isn't considered my domestic partner and isn't eligible to be on my insurance plan. We originally planned on moving in together this month, but this unexpectedly put a wrench in our plans. Lindsay has already racked up significant co-pays, not including the $500 co-pay for an overnight hospital admission. Additionally, the cost of lodging, gas, tolls, and meals will be upwards of $1,000, even at the Memorial Sloan Kettering patient rate. It's anticipated that she will be out of commission for 4-8 weeks and unable to drive, cook, or care for her own basic needs for a minimum of a month due to the location of the cancer. We both work full-time and are by no means claiming poverty, but this has definitely put a significant financial strain on our family since we are still financially responsible for two households. If you are able to contribute in any way we would be tremendously grateful.
