Hi, my name is Alanis Santiago Melendez and I am the daughter of Jose Santiago Quiles. My father has stage 4 colon cancer that has spread from one big mass in his colon to many small masses in his kidney and one mass in his lung. He is fighting with all his strength but could use all the help he can get. My fathers story with cancer began as summer started; with symptoms of fever nausea, lack of appetite, weight loss, headaches, and extreme fatigue. These symptoms continued for two months before he went to the emergency room; the same week we were preparing to set off to Italy for our families long awaited trip in celebration of me graduating. A day later we were hit with the news no one ever expects: stage 4 colon cancer. Since then, it has been a struggle for my father, who has always been one of the strongest people I know to go through this process of chemotherapy. For the rest of us, it is hard for us to get used to seeing our father, husband, brother and son act unlike himself and struggle. It is also no easy task to handle the bills from his treatment on top of dealing with a first year college student. Due to the way minorities are raised, seeking help is never an option especially in this way, but at times like this we do not get the privilege to hold our pride tightly. It is with all my heart that I must ask for anyone who is capable, willing, and kind to donate whatever it is that you can. No donation is too small. Additionally, if you can not donate, keep my father in your heart and hope that he stays strong. When people fight together, anything is possible.
