In the coastal village of Johnshaven you will find there are three Public Access Defibrillator Machines (DeFibs) that have both adult and paediatric pads ready for use. Defibrillators give a high energy electric shock as an essential part in trying to save the life of someone who’s in cardiac arrest. But did you know that these life-saving devices are funded and managed entirely through voluntary contributions on behalf of the local community? And did you know that you can help contribute too? Even a small donation would be gratefully received and put straight toward the ongoing monthly maintenance that keeps these machines primed and ready to save a life. Please read our J-DeFIB Crowdfunding page below and please do what you can to help ensure our Defibrillators are ready to save a precious life. Who pays for the Johnner DeFibs? Each of the Public Access DeFib machines, including the protective boxes, components, accessories, installation and maintenance has been paid for through local fundraising and several generous donations. These are not paid for by the Ambulance Service, they are not operated or managed by the First Responders and they are not provided by the NHS. Who bought the Johnner DeFibs? The initial purchases of the machines (which was only made possible through kind donations and community fundraising events. The very first DeFib machine was gifted by the very generous Mr Alistair Macphie, third generation owner of Macphies of Glenbervie. Local fundraising events and community donations helped fund the installation of this very first device and the purchase of its protective cabinet. These donations also enabled acquisition of a second defibrillator. Le Tour de Anchor, a uninhibited 12 hour display of cycling endurance by a number of village residents; followed by an equally unfettered Pub Quiz hosted in the comfort of the Anchor Hotel launched the Crowdfunding campaign for a third defibrillator. Over the past few years, the Johnshaven Fish Festival Fund has donated £1000 to help with maintenance and replacement costs. All ongoing costs are covered entirely by community fundraising and donations. Where are the Defib machines located in Johnshaven? The machines, AEDs - automated external defibs, can be found at three separate locations, positioned where it is possible to have continuous power supply and pedestrian access. • Wairds Park Reception on Beach Road • Johnshaven Village Hall on Mid Street • Masonic Lodge on Main Street All three of the defibs are linked to the Scottish Ambulance Service so if somebody dials 999 the emergency service operators can tell the caller where the nearest access would be. At each location you will find clear instructions on how to use these. Who looks after the Johnner Defibs? Regular upkeep and maintenance is carried out voluntarily by three village residents Brian Taylor, Sheena Taylor and Mark Smith. Once a month Sheena must do a quick report to the ambulance service confirming that all the defibs have been checked and are all operational and declare the expiry dates of all pads. Sheena or Brian will also check the defibs every Sunday with Mark providing back up support. Along with ensuring the machines in working order, Sheena manages the purchase and distribution of any new or replacement equipment. Sheena also ensures that the necessary funding is in place to keep the defibs in working order. How much does it cost to keep a Defibrillator in working order? In addition to the initial purchase of the defibrillator machine, there are other items and consumables that are required to ensure the device is primed and ready. The pad and resus kits are single use (they must be discarded after any use) and subject to expiry dates. They must be replaced within 4 years. Pads currently cost between £130 and £160. Resus kits cost around £25. Defibrillator machines must be housed within protective cabinets which are exposed to the seaside environment. They are well maintained by local volunteers, but these will require replacement soon. Protective cabinets cost around £1000 each. Each device requires 24hr power supply. The annual cost is around £20, a cost that is very kindly covered by the Groups that manage the facilities at each defib location. Thank you to Johnshaven Village Hall, Johnshaven Freemasons Lodge 119 and Wairds Park Committee! And thank you for your kind and generous donation!
