John and Amanda Cummins, your favorite local salsa and hot sauce makers and owners of JAK’s need your help as they prepare for John’s upcoming kidney transplant. John was diagnosed with kidney disease nearly 30 years ago. The damage to his kidneys was caused by an operation when he was a child battling spinal meningitis and wasn’t revealed until well into adulthood. He has been able to maintain relatively stable kidney function for many years. Last year, his kidney function started taking a rapid decline and he was advised to prepare for dialysis and/or a kidney transplant. It was during this time that his wife, Amanda, offered to see if she could donate and help. Initially, they believed that they would most likely be participating in the kidney paired donation, or kidney exchange. With this option, Amanda would donate to a matched recipient and in return, John would then receive a kidney from another matched donor. During the extensive testing process for both John and Amanda, they found out that they were a match and Amanda could donate directly to John. While this is extremely wonderful news, it does put additional hardships on them and their business. Because they went into surgery at the same time, they have had to halt production on their salsa business--their sole source of income while both recover. John and Amanda make and deliver all their products themselves. Amanda will be in Seattle for approximately 10 days until she is able to come home but will be unable to work for six weeks. John will need to live in a hotel room near the hospital for up to six weeks until he is able to come home. Both will require caregivers during this time. We are asking for your donations to assist them with their needs during their recovery. This will include the hotel stay in Seattle for six weeks, parking costs, medical bills, and standard monthly bills that will need to be paid while they are unable to work. We know this is a big ask, but this could not have come at a worse time. The transplant has become urgent as John’s numbers have recently crashed into dangerous levels pushing this to happen during the busiest time of the year when they are usually able to save money to carry them through the slower season.
