My son’s Joe 30 years old and Brandon 19 years old, are in need of transportation that will make their lives manageable and give them the ability to get to medical appts., visits, and community events that they may not be able to attend without the personal transportation of a handicap van. We have made use of the local public transportation, but while this is good transportation at times it can be more of a detriment than helpful. Just as an example, when they have somewhere that they need to be and the Paratransit cannot get back to pick them up in a timely manner then they run the risk of the battery dying to their oxygen vent machines. The vent machines are what helps them to breathe. Brandon can breathe some on his own, for now, but Joe is dependent on his 24/7. Both Joe and Brandon were born with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. As this disease has slowly robbed them of their physical abilities, it has drastically impacted their quality of life. Joe stopped walking around age 11 and was completely dependent on a motorized wheelchair by age 12, while Brandon stopped walking by age 5 and became completely dependent on a motorized wheelchair by age 6. They are both in need of breathing assistance with a ventilator and will inevitably develop heart failure. Taking care of 2 sons with MD has been very challenging for all of us, and as their condition’s worsen, it takes away the simplest motor functions, including rolling over in bed, feeding themselves, and even giving their loved ones a hug. They have been through surgeries already and the most invasive is yet to come. Brandon’s condition has declined much sooner than expected. With a handicap accessible vehicle that meets their special needs it would allow for the opportunity to give help them experience a better quality of life, to get them out of the house to see more of the world around them and help get them to doctor appointments that must be attended for their care.Joe and Brandon are both brave and loving young men who have never asked for much and have learned to deal with the challenges that life has dealt them, refusing to let their disabilities define them. They never complain. Please consider helping my family with raising enough money to buy a handicap accessible van that can transport both of them at the same time. Thank you and God Bless. To view a video montage of photos click herehttps://animoto.com/play/30TDZOyHIBb0tcuKYDzVJw?autostart=1
