Losing our daughter, Lucy, to Krabbe disease was the most difficult journey of our lives. Since her diagnosis, we have stood on all sides of the fence when it came to having another child. Because the Krabbe gene is genetic, any naturally conceived child we have has a 25% chance of being affected and a 50% chance of being a single gene carrier. We decided that we needed to take the possibility of having another child with Krabbe out of the equation, and the only way to do that was through the IVF process. IVF allows us to have a special test made so that our embryos can be tested for the Krabbe gene, and only the non-affected ones would be options to implant. In January of this year, we started taking baby steps toward having another child through IVF. This is not a decision we have taken lightly. We have weighed our options and reassessed our timeline almost monthly while we waited for other big life things to line up better. Since January Miles has graduated college and started the long search for a job in his new field and I have almost completed my Medical Assistant program. I start my externship this week which will last about 8 weeks. We had big hopes in the beginning for one of us to get a job that might offer fertility benefits, but that now seems very unlikely. We have applied for grants in the hopes of finding financial assistance that way. Grants are difficult and mostly reserved for people with bigger fertility issues than us. So far we have been paying as we go which is how it will continue since insurance isn’t a factor. We have been at a standstill for the last couple of months, again weighing our options as the next steps in the process cost the most and mean there’s no looking back. So we are once again turning to our community to ask for help in making this dream come true. We would be eternally grateful for any assistance to help us bring another child to love into this world, and we strongly believe Lucy deserves to be a big sister. Thank you.
