On July 5th, Xiomara and her family found an extra firework, which was the only one they planned to light during the holiday break. When they went to light the firework, it exploded instantly. Xiomara and Luis were rushed to the emergency room at Ronald Regan hospital and the doctors decided that Xiomara needed to have her hand amputated, while Luis would need one finger amputated and another partially amputated. Xiomara was also treated for burns to her face and had stitches put into her lip. Xiomara loves to draw and paint. She takes a self-defense class and she loves to play rough with her dad. Luis and his wife, Marisol, are loved by everyone who knows them and have a reputation as hard workers who love their children, Xiomara(12) and Mateo(5), more than anything. This traumatic accident, which has changed their lives forever, is also placing a great financial strain on the family. Luis owns and operates his own landscaping business but he is unable to work at the moment due to his injuries. The family is facing bills for surgery plus the cost of therapy and prosthetics for Xiomara.
