Tray's family story over the past 2 years, On July 20, 2024, our sweet 3-month-old baby girl (Leighton) suffered a seizure and was taken to Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital. We were devastated! She was our rainbow baby and a miracle from God after we had lost a baby boy in February 2024. After 24 hours of testing, Leighton was diagnosed with a rare disorder called Congenital Hyperinsulinism, a disorder of the pancreas, which causes blood glucose levels to drop critically low. The condition is so rare only two hospitals in the country can provide treatment and she was eventually transferred to Philadelphia. She was admitted to the children’s hospital there and underwent further testing which would identify where the lesion on her pancreas was. This required her to be intubated and fully sedated while she had a 2-hour scan of her pancreas. Just two days later, our girl would undergo surgery in which the surgeon would remove small pieces of her pancreas little by little, with the goal of eventually removing all the insulin-producing lesion. God was so good to us and brought her safely through the surgery. She then spent 11 long nights in the NICU. Seeing our girl so sick was just heartbreaking! I am happy to say after a 24-hour fast, she was declared “officially cured.” Almost 2 months later we were finally able to take her home and reunite with our sweet boy Caden! Little did we know 8 months later our family would face another tragedy. On April 2, 2024, Tray fell from a ladder and suffered a severe spinal cord injury along with fracturing all but one vertebra in his cervical spine. Immediately after the fall, Tray was unable to move anything below the neck. He also suffered multiple lacerations to his head and right forearm. He was flown to Grady Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery on his spine and was admitted to the ICU for 9 days. His surgeon informed me Tray’s injury was worse than he thought prior to surgery, and he didn’t know if Tray would ever be able to walk again or feed himself. We were heartbroken and so scared, but trusted God had a plan and would see us through this. It was already a miracle that Tray was alive given the nature of his injury. God held Tray that day and would continue showing his love and grace to our family. Our next obstacle would be to get Tray transferred to an acute rehab facility once he was stable. He was transferred to the Shepherd Spinal Center where he stayed for 2 months and had intense daily therapy. I am beyond happy to say he has overcome so many obstacles and is both walking and feeding himself now! God is so Great! After his inpatient stay, Tray was transferred to the Day Program at Shepherd, where he currently does 6 hours of therapy each day Monday through Friday. He will soon graduate from the Day program, after 6 weeks of treatment, and has been offered a spot in their outpatient therapy program! Unfortunately, Tray’s insurance benefits for therapy have run out and we will be paying out of pocket for the remainder of his therapy. We were told by his physician at Shepherd his recovery will take at least one year, and he may even continue to improve up to two years post-accident. We want Tray to receive any therapy he can that will help him continue to progress and are trusting God to see us through just as he always has! We are beyond grateful for the prayers and generosity we have received from so many people!
