My name is Ashley, and I am asking for your help for my mother-in-law or as we know her, Oma. Back in March of this year, she was rushed to the hospital with severe back pain and the inability to walk. Upon tests they found a mass in her back and after many days of more tests it was determined to be cancerous. However, it did not originate there as they found more cancerous cells throughout her pelvic region. Another round of tests and torturous weeks of waiting we were finally told she has bladder cancer stage IV. Had to hear it was inoperable, and because of her body being too weak she cannot do chemotherapy. Which means there isn’t anything they can do other than try to shrink the mass in her back with radiation and immunotherapy for the masses in her pelvis along with palliative care. We were devastated and heartbroken. Our loving, laughing, always there for you Oma is withering away. It has been emotionally, mentally, and financially taxing on the family. We are your standard hard working barely above the poverty line family. Oma and her husband are on fixed incomes with minimal insurance. Her insurance ran out and she was sent home with 16 different prescriptions to help keep her comfortable. Just one of them costs $700 out of pocket and that is with insurance. It is crazy to us the costs of these medications and how they expect lower-middle class individuals to pay for these things?! Her husband has been agonizing over different ways of finding her relief. It’s bad enough to learn her fate, but then to watch her in pain daily because himself and family cannot afford what she needs to live out the remainder of her life somewhat pain free. This is where we are asking for your help. Please donate whatever you can to help us cover the medical and 16 different prescription costs.
