Tariq is a beloved brother, son, and friend who is passionate about farming and growing food. His love for farming has touched countless hearts and inspired many others. In July 2024, his life took a devastating turn when he was involved in a life-threatening accident that left him in a coma for two and a half weeks. As a result of the accident, Tariq sustained severe injuries, including a pierced lung, lacerated liver, and a broken rib. Having undergone nine surgeries and counting, he continues to demonstrate strength and determination. His family and friends have been in anguish, holding onto hope for his recovery. Thankfully, Tariq has shown incredible resilience, and with the help of an exceptional trauma team, he has managed to pull through, emerging from the coma with a determination to return to his beloved plants and continue contributing positively to the world. Tariq's journey extends far beyond the accident, as he has been the driving force behind several local community gardens in Oakland, and across California, as well as farms in Georgia and Oklahoma. He has selflessly worked to create green spaces that have served to bring communities together and provide fresh, nutritious produce to those in need. Tariq's green thumb and big heart have inspired everyone around him, making his contributions to this world invaluable. His love for growing food and an urgency to return to the land so that he can continue to give back to his community is a testament to the extraordinary person he is. While Tariq has made remarkable progress, the road to rehabilitation is long and will require ongoing medical attention, physical therapy, and support.
