My name is Pedro and I am fundraising for my wife, Sophie, who has been battling chronic health issues over the past few years. She was recently diagnosed with a genetic connective tissue disorder called Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (hEDS), which affects not only her joints causing excessive motion but also her skin and blood vessels. After being involved in a car accident in 2024, she began to develop dozens of disabling symptoms due to a whiplash injury on an already unstable, hypermobile neck. This resulted in what her doctor diagnosed as severe cervical instability, particularly of her upper cervical spine which houses vital structures such as the brainstem, carotid arteries, jugular veins, and vagus nerves. Upper cervical instability can cause an incredible decline in health due to conditions such as dysautonomia, POTS, nausea and functional digestive disorders, migraine headaches, chronic fatigue, tinnitus, visual disturbances, TMJ dysfunction, brain fog, balance issues, anxiety, depression, among others, resulting in extreme pain, discomfort, weight loss, and malnutrition. Until receiving her diagnosis, Sophie spent over a year seeing multiple doctors and specialists, undergoing countless tests, and trying numerous medications with hopes to find relief and get to the root cause of all her symptoms. Unfortunately, she was left with little to no improvement, frequently referred to by doctors as a “complex case” and a “diagnostic dilemma.” Since receiving her diagnosis, Sophie has greatly benefited from a treatment called Prolotherapy; a regenerative injection technique used to treat joint and spine instability by repairing weakened, damaged ligaments and tendons. After only three treatments, Sophie is already seeing promising improvement in her symptoms as her cervical spine starts to stabilize. However, being considered “regenerative medicine”, prolotherapy is not covered by insurance and is quite an expensive procedure. Most patients need only 3-6 rounds of treatment when undergoing prolotherapy. But being that Sophie’s condition is so severe, her doctor estimates she will need a total of 12-13 treatments to avoid an upper cervical spinal fusion. That being said, we are incredibly optimistic as he anticipates she will make a complete recovery once the instability is fully resolved! These treatments have given us so much hope for healing and we continue to pray that Sophie will be able to regain her health and all that life has to offer.
