Hello, Ron Martin, a long-time Ft. Meade activist veteran and friend to many, had a very large tree limb fall on his home on May 2nd (2024). Ron has lived in Ft. Meade his whole life and worked at the Walmart in Bartow since 1983. He has a mortgage on his home and in October he was informed that his homeowners’ insurance with Farmers Insurance would be cancelled at the end of April. Ron was working with his mortgage company to find another policy. Unfortunately, two days after his insurance was cancelled a large Laurel Oak tree limb fell on his house. Note: Farmers Insurance recently announced that they are dropping 100,000 homeowners in Florida because of high insurance claims incurred following Hurricane Ian. The tree only took off the corner of the house. However, the roof was damaged and what remained was a huge tree limb resting on his roof, a dangerously damaged huge tree straddling the property line between Ron’s house and his neighbor’s house and a damaged roof. Initially, the limb had to be removed which Ron accomplished with the help of friends and neighbors. Ron then paid $4,000 for the removal of the tree which was a liability and danger to his house. He now needs to put a new roof on his house in order to get a new homeowner insurance. Without homeowner insurance, Ron risks losing his home which he has been paying for years. Ron has worked for years and now his savings have been greatly depleted by the cost of removing the tree. He is now facing a $13,000 bill for the replacement of the damaged roof. His requests for help from various government agencies were declined as his income is slightly over their requirements or there is no more funds to distribute. He will not be able to get homeowners’ insurance until the roof is completed. As his friends, we are trying to raise at least half of the funds needed. As caring people, any amount of help you could give Ron for this project would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Veysel Dokur
