Meet Ruqayah, an 11-year-old girl from Iraq who has been diagnosed with pigmented tapeto-retnal abiotrophy. This illness has caused her to lose 95% of her vision in one eye and 100% of her vision in the other eye. Ruqayah is an extremely intelligent and gifted girl. Her mother spends hours each day going over school work and teaching her by reading out loud to her. Ruqayah’s father has already taken her to doctors all over the Middle East but all treatments failed. The father did research that led him to a doctor in Europe and it has been the only treatment that has shown improvement. Ruqayah has already undergone two treatments which cost $30,000 each by selling everything the family owns and borrowing money from family, friends and neighbors. However, Ruqayah now needs two more treatments which will total $60,000. Unfortunately, in Iraq, they do not have access to the same medical services that we have here in the United States. Ruqayah has suffered so much these past years from bullying in school and adjusting to life with blindness. The other children in school rarely see someone with her needs and don’t handle the situation well so they bully her by pushing her to the ground. In Iraq, they don’t have access to the same handicap services that we have here in the USA so doing something as simple as walking down the street is almost impossible because of the road and walkway conditions. She is a bright and intelligent girl who deserves a chance at a normal life. We are raising money for Ruqayah’s father to take her to Europe and receive treatment. With your help, we can give Ruqayah the gift of sight and a chance at a brighter future. The campaign is not only to raise money for current and future treatments totaling $60,000 but also to raise money for the additional debt the father is now in due to previous treatments. The family is extremely active in the community and always giving back whenever possible.
