Hello, friends & fellows! I am writing to you to try to get some help for my dear friend, Jac Bernhard. As many of you may know, Jac has had a difficult couple of months. After an arduous battle with addiction, a bipolar diagnosis this past August, and multiple years of working toward his recovery, he decided to enter a rehab program here in NYC. After just one night in this facility, it became clear that it was not a safe place for Jac, a transgender man, to stay long-term. Jac has a chronic and rare genetic condition called hereditary angioedema, which requires him to have access to medication at a moment's notice should he have a flare-up. Many rehab programs only allow patients to access medication once or twice every day on a predetermined schedule. As a person with both a genetic condition and bipolar disorder, Jac needs access to his medication on a much more frequent basis than this. He is still working every day toward finding a facility that can accept his insurance and facilitate his medication. This will likely be a 1-6 month program and he will hopefully exit with a place in sober-living housing and some level of continuing support as he finds his feet. In the interim, Jac is homeless and on leave from his job. His previous living situation is no longer viable and he has nowhere to go. As an actor and gymnastics coach, Jac was unable to work for a good portion of the past year after suffering from a work-related injury to his ankle. He has no savings as a result of this difficult period and is without a financial safety net to catch him while he sorts out his next steps. We're setting up this fundraiser to help Jac get through the year and to ensure that he has the necessary resources to live safely and calmly, both now and after his program. He has a long road ahead. Any funds raised will help Jac find stable housing, cover food and other living expenses, pay for medical bills and copays, and ensure he can take the time he needs to get help with his addiction. Jac has been a friend and mentor to me for more than a decade. He shines in everything he does- as an accomplished actor, writer, and musician; and a thoughtful and consistent friend. I hope we can help him in his time of need and know he would do the very same for any friend who called on him. With love and gratitude, Aynsley & Jac
