Hello friends, family, and kind-hearted strangers. My name is Junna and I am reaching out to you today with a heart full of hope and a humble request for support for my Dad, Pete. Dad, once a vibrant and active bricklayer, had his life dramatically altered by a tragic fall from a scaffold on 1 January 2024 that has left him a complete Paraplegic. The initial phase of his journey has had unimaginable challenges, both physically and emotionally. He’s had an incredibly tough road to recovery - 3 emergency ICU stints; 4 rapid response teams visits; 3 blood clots; 1 Ecoli infection; 1 bladder infection; 3 urine infections; 3 blood transfusions; 1 Myocarditis; 1 Pericarditis; 1 Scepticaemia; 1 non-responsive morning; 1 Jaundice; 1 Pneumonia; countless blood tests, scans, X-rays, cannulas, antibiotics, and pain medication. So I am starting this LFEBridge fundraiser to help Dad regain his independence - but mostly because the NDIS does not provide funding to anyone over the age of 65 (yes, you read that right! Once you turn 65, you are NOT eligible for any NDIS funding. The Australian government has decided that the most vulnerable age cohort is not eligible to access much-needed funding - that will be my next quest to have that changed!). What this means is: 1. All modifications for Dad’s home will be out-of-pocket. (NDIS funds a max. $20,000) 2. Dad is only eligible for a maximum of 10 hours of funded care per week. Dad requires full-time care, but at a minimum, he needs 21 hours per week. (NDIS funds a max. 6 hours per day) This is also around a 6-month waiting list for funded care. So until there is availability, Dad’s care will also be out-of-pocket. 3. Converting a vehicle to be wheelchair accessible will be out-of-pocket. (NDIS will fund vehicle modifications) 4. All continence consumables will also be out-of-pocket. (NDIS funds a max $1,500) We are thankful that Dad’s electric wheelchair and accessible equipment will be covered by EnableNSW and so blessed that my hubby Craig can do the work at Dad’s home. We are also so grateful to our wonderful neighbours who have donated their labour and time to help build Dad’s new ramp so he can get into his home. Despite all of this, there will still be a tremendous financial burden on my parents. Especially the first 6 months that Dad will be home without government-funded care. With your support, if we can raise at least 50% of these costs, it will make such a difference to my parents. Here's where your support can help. The funds raised through this campaign will go directly towards: Home Modifications: To ensure his safety and accessibility, we need to modify Dad’s home. This includes an outdoor ramp to access his home, grab bars, new doorways to his bedroom and bathroom, and an accessible bathroom. The forecasted cost for this is approximately $15,000. Morning Care: Dad will need a minimum of 2 hours of personal care each morning. We’ve calculated this to be approximately $1,000/week. Our family will have to cover the remaining requirements. If the waiting list is 6 months long, that’s $26,000! If we can miraculously meet the $15,000 target, all surplus funds will go towards a: Vehicle: Without access to NDIS funding, your contributions will help us acquire a wheelchair-accessible vehicle for Dad so that he can participate in family outings and regain some of the freedom he once had. A car that has already been converted is around $20,000. Your kindness and generosity can make a significant impact on my Dad's life. Whether it's a small donation, a heartfelt message, or sharing this campaign with your network, every bit of support counts. Or if you’re a business that can donate any material, bathroom supplies, help with an accessible vehicle; or a tradie that can donate their time - especially any plumbing or electrician services and help Craig out - we would be most grateful. Together, we can fill part of the giant void that the NDIS has left and give my Dad the help he needs to start this new direction in life. I'm also hoping this will help raise awareness to drive the change needed, so all Aussies, no matter what age, can have access to NDIS funding. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for being a part of this journey with us. Your love and support mean the world to our family. Junna xx
