Paolo is a sweet 18-month-old boy from Lima, Peru. He was born with profound sensorineural hearing loss in both ears, which means he cannot hear, and will most likely have difficulties with his speech development. The only solution is a cochlear implant (CI). This will help Paolo fully integrate into society and — most importantly — hear the world! The total cost for the device and surgery is around $40,000 USD and is not covered by any insurance company because it is not a common procedure in Peru. The CI surgery has to be done as soon as possible to allow Paolo to catch up on what he has missed and to help him with hearing and speech development for the bright future that awaits him. Cochlear implant surgery is fascinating. A surgeon makes an incision behind the ear and forms a small hole in the skull bone where the internal device will be placed. Then a small opening is created in the cochlea to thread the electrode of the internal device. The incision is then stitched closed, and the internal device will sit under the skin. I have created this LFEBridge on behalf of friends and family to fund the remaining cost of the surgery and help with upcoming medical expenses. Collectively, we are sure we can intervene at this tender age and allow him to achieve his fullest potential. Your generosity will help Paolo hear the world around him and improve his speech; even a small contribution will give him the opportunity to become a fully integrated member of society and enjoy his childhood. We are moved by the outpouring of love, support, and prayers his parents have already received. Paolo’s parents are grateful for friends and family, both near and far, who have reached out to offer help. Anything you can contribute is greatly appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to read Paolo’s story and we hope you’ll share it with your community!
