My friend Alondra moved to the United States from Mexico with her parents over two decades ago. She has never been able to navigate the immigration system to receive her green card until now. Like thousands of people in our communities she lives with the fear of being deported. She works tirelessly as a housekeeper to support herself. Her son, born in the US just turned 21 and is able to petition for his mother to obtain her green card. This is such long-awaited good news. But, this process is expensive for those who work in the lowest paying jobs. It requires an attorney to walk with you, there is a fee to apply for immigration status($1000), and fees for each form in the application process. It adds up to nearly $5000 dollars. I didn't know. I know the despair I feel watching the news from our southern border and feeling helpless to do anything. Here is something: I am helping Alondra. I want her to be free to live her life. I want her to be able to come out of the shadows, seek a vocation, and build resources that she says will enable her to help others in her same circumstance. I am wondering if you might want to help too. No amount is too small. Every gift is a prayer for her life. If you don't like being solicited this way, especially by a friend, please accept my apology. Sometimes the heart has no manners. Praying will also help. Pray for Alondra and pray for all the others. With gratitude for hearing me, Elizabeth+
