My friend Miriam is fighting for her life battling breast cancer for the 3rd time. The good news is she is in stage 1; however, she has the worst type of cancer which is the hardest to treat. She will begin chemotherapy next week which will last for 3 to 6 months. After the chemo, she will have a double mastectomy and reconstruction followed by a hysterectomy a few months later. Miriam's story of courage and survival is truly amazing. The second time she had breast cancer, 10 years ago, she had no health insurance. She is a citizen of Mexico and the U.S. Although she was living in the U.S. at the time, she returned to Mexico for treatment as she could not afford treatment in the U.S. with no health insurance. Miriam received treatment at a hospital in Mexico. Her cancer was in stage 3 at the time, and the doctors there told her she would likely not survive. Every day in the hospital, she watched stage 2 and 3 patients pass away. She continued to fight. She had certain procedures with no anesthesia as the hospital was not equipped like the hospitals in the U.S. She had no choice. Miriam survived the stage 3 cancer and made a full recovery.... a true miracle. She returned to the U.S. where her two children live and continued to work and put her life back together. A couple of months ago during a routine mammogram, her doctor found two tumors...the cancer is back. At this point, Miriam's treatment plan will be very aggressive with many months of chemo and two major surgeries. She works very hard, and she does have health insurance now which is a blessing. Although she has health insurance, Miriam will need to pay for 40% of her treatment out of pocket and will not be able to work for 6 months to a year. I have known Miriam for 10 years. She is extremely hard-working with a positive outlook. She sees the glass half full. She loves her children and her two chihuahuas (Chicken Nugget and Chicken Noodle). She is very close to her siblings, some live in the U.S. and some in Mexico. Her mother passed away a few years ago, but her father is still living in Mexico in his 90s. She loves her family and visits them when she can. She is a woman of faith and prays for others often. She goes out of her way to help others, and people feel good just by being around her. The world is a better place because she is in it. The above was written by a friend of my Mom, Miriam. We ask that you donate whatever you can to help my Mom with her medical expenses and treatment. Any donation is greatly appreciated. Thank you!
