Hi my name is Nic. On March 8 2024, I fractured both ankles and feet, my back, and my left wrist, after falling approximately 80 feet. I spent a month in the hospital after, healing my injuries. Since then, I have been working hard to rehab my body. The medical bills from that stay alone have been overwhelming, to say the least. Rehabbing has been a lot of work but I have tried to hold onto the hope that I would run again. After being cleared to walk in late June, I tried so hard to be able to walk and it just wasn’t working. There were days that I was able to walk all day, but as time went on, those days became less and less frequent until I needed I needed to spend all of my time in my wheelchair. Fixed frame wheelchairs, the type of wheelchairs that you see people with long-term disabilities use, are very, very expensive. It was worth every penny though. It gave me more freedom and independence than I thought was possible. By early October, I was strongly considering amputation. I honestly wish I had pushed my medical team harder then. I think I suffered longer than I needed to. My left ankle was in extreme pain 24/7, and pain meds barely helped. At a follow up appointment with my orthopedic surgeon, my x-rays showed that there was a bone in my left ankle dying. I finally had an explanation for why my left ankle was hurting so bad when my right was pretty much fully healed at this point. I had two choices; an amputation or an ankle fusion. I was already considering amputation, and after a few second opinions, it was clear that it was the better option for quality of life. I had an amputation on March 19, 2024. It is March 25, 2024 as I lay here in my hospital bed. This hospital stay and surgery alone is going to cost so much money, so will rehab, and my running blade, PT appointments, follow-up, etc., along with my medical bills from last year’s hospital stay, my wheelchair, and the lost income from not being able to work for over a year. Thank you so much to the people that have donated money already. Any little bit helps. Thank you so much for your generosity and for taking time to read my story. I cannot express my gratitude enough.
