My dear friend Lauren has been wanting to pursue a neurospych assessment for ASD (autism) and ADHD for a very long time, but up until now the cost of assessment has made this inaccessible to her. As someone with multiple siblings and loved ones who have [eventually] received these diagnoses, I’ve seen how life-changing it is for someone to receive not only the clarity and validation that a diagnosis brings, but also a whole new world of support and understanding that comes with it. I hope that for Lauren, getting an official diagnosis will unlock new avenues of professional support and treatment, access to medication, much-needed accommodations in her workplace, and of course the extremely validating experience of being more fully seen, known, understood, and LOVED by herself and her loved ones. Lauren will be getting a neuropsych assessment at Macquarie University which is by far the cheapest avenue for this assessment, and she needs our help to make this happen. The assessment itself costs $800-1200, and travel and accommodation in Sydney (since the assessment takes an entire day) may cost around $300. Even though money has been really tight for Lauren, especially in light of her chronic health conditions and capacity to work, I’ve seen her give money generously from what little she has to support less fortunate people to afford neuropsych assessments, even in weeks where she had to wait a little longer to afford to buy food for herself. She has such a generous heart and cares so deeply about people on the margins receiving support and care, and I’d love for us as her community to show her some of that same love. She deserves it. Update: As well as the neuropsych assessment, Lauren will also need some psychiatrist sessions in order to access potential supports such as medication. In light of this, I am updating the target for this fundraiser accordingly. Thank you so much to everyone who has contributed already. It is so very appreciated.
