My name is Joe and this is my friend Khalid, from Casablanca, Morocco. I met Khalid while working at an American school in Casablanca. Khalid's parents were unable to raise him so he was raised in an American orphanage in Azrou, Morocco. Many of the children raised in the same orphanage were given the opportunity to go to the United States or Europe as adults and many have stable jobs and families there. Khalid was not given that opportunity and was not given any useful life skills. He has picked up some computer skills over the years but does not have any formal qualifications. He has done several odd jobs in the years since I left Morocco and he is currently a car park guardian in Casablanca, dependent on tips. He is also trying to start a business but does not have the capital to start anything substantial. To further complicate matters, he has developed significant heart problems, related to blood clots, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure. He had a coronary angioplasty at a government hospital to clear out his coronary arteries. He is unable to work at the moment due to his heart condition and he needs about $100/month for medication to treat the heart problems. He also needs to buy healthier food to reduce his cholesterol and blood pressure. Khalid lived with his mother until she passed away a few years ago. Because Khalid was adopted by the orphanage he did not inherit the house from his mother. Instead, his half-sister and her children moved into their mother's house, and she has allowed him to stay for the time being. He needs about $400/month over the next year ($4,800 total) to pay for healthy food, medication, and housing expenses. If there is anything left over, Khalid would like to start a business so he can be financially self-sufficient. Your generosity is much appreciated!
