My name is Jackie and as many of you know, two years ago, my brother, John, was diagnosed with bone cancer. The cancer wouldn’t respond to chemo or radiation, so surgery was his only option. The doctors at Duke University Hospital removed a grapefruit-sized tumor from his hip and rebuilt his pelvis. After the surgery, John underwent months of physical therapy to strengthen his legs. At one point, he was able to use a walker, but his wheelchair remained his primary mode of travel. Early this summer, he discovered that not only had his cancer returned, but it mutated into an even rarer and more aggressive cancer (dedifferentiated chondrosarcoma). His left leg and pelvis were amputated. John spent 43 days in the hospital and rehab. On his 58th birthday, he was able to return home! John has served his community as a public school teacher for nearly 30 years. His current position in the Nash County school district is teaching ESL, a job that he loves. He is unable to continue teaching at this time and will be cared for at home. So many people have reached out and asked what can they do. Donations are needed to cover the cost of paid help during the day in addition to physical therapy, medical supplies, alterations to their home, plus any unforeseen expenses. Helping John get the care he needs is the best way you can support him and his family. We are so grateful to everyone who has reached out. I would ask that you please share John’s story and this campaign so we can reach our goal.
