Today I am reaching out to you on behalf of my sister Mari Vela whose daughter, Jessica Herrera, was in a vehicle rollover(7/15). My niece is in the hospital in and out of sedation and intubation in ICU where she will remain for an unspecified amount of time. On Monday my family received news that is life changing for all of us. My niece suffered severe nerve damage to her spine and will be a paraplegic. She’s 29 years old with 4 children under four. Her youngest baby is just 3 months old. Currently, she will remain hospitalized(time unknown) and then be moved to a therapy unit to help her learn how to navigate everyday life as a paraplegic. Along with her spine injury, she has a fractured rib, broken foot, and continuous fluid in her lungs. Today (7/19) the doctor’s update is that she will undergo surgery tomorrow to stabilize a neck fracture we were just informed about. At this time, my sister and other niece are flying to and from south Texas back to their home in Michigan to make accommodations for relocation to assist Jessica. We are doing everything we can to ensure that the children remain together while my niece recovers. Our family is distraught and kindly asking for prayers and financial assistance. We are initiating a fundraising effort and all funds will be used to cover childcare expenses, relocation expenses, and for any needs of the children and Jessica as she leads a long road to recovery.
