This campaign is to help Jaime and Kennedy. Jamie is a single mother to 6 year old Kennedy. Kennedy was born with Spinal Muscular Atrophy. Many people saw on the Lake Orion Chat Room facebook page there was a post from a mom of a medically fragile child who asked if the power was back on so that she could return home and to work. For most of us the power outages are annoying and an inconvenience. However, Kennedy is on a ventilator. Jamie has a portable generator that is huge, but the humidifier for the vent needs a consistent power source. The gas generator isn’t powerful enough on it’s own to run it and fried the humidifier last time she tried running it. With the way we lose power here in our town, Kennedy could form a mucus plug without enough humidification and things could go bad very quickly. Most children with this condition pass because of a mucus plug. If the power is out for greater than a couple hours they have to leave home and go to Jamie's mother's house. Jamie's mom's home is not handicapped accessible as it is a quad-style home. Not only do they need to take all of Kennedy's machines, but they also have to bring back up machines in case one breaks. As you can imagine with the amount of care and equipment that Kennedy needs it is inconvenient and a hardship to pack everything up and leave the comfort of their home. In the past when Jamie has reached out to the health insurance they have denied any funds to help and no solutions. A whole house generator would make Jamie and Kennedy’s life safer, easier, and less stressful. This is being organized by myself, Kathy Demees. As an occupational therapist, I was concerned when I read the post on Facebook and thought of the hardship that the constant power outages must be for this family. I often see them on walks and have wondered about them. This campaign is also being organized with the help of Tara Moore, born and raised in Lake Orion, who is involved in the community and charity events. After some digging because the post was removed and with the help of a former co-worker I was able to get in touch with Jamie. Once I made contact with Jamie, I realized that there are other things they need help with. As Kennedy continues to grow Jamie will need a track system, equipment, and home modifications to help with transfers, bathing and toileting. As you can imagine this system is very expensive and often denied by insurance companies. Please consider donating if you can. Any amount will help.
