**UPDATE** Brought Harry in for observation at our local veterinary ER after his color dropped overnight. The Drs confirmed he is now suffering from anemia and is not reacting to the steroids he's been on since Monday. We've decided to admit him so that he can receive revised treatment and a blood transfusion. If we had maintained treatment at home, his survival chances were zero. Now we at least have a chance to see if he can make it to the other side of this ordeal. That is only possible because so many of you have been so kind. Thank you all! Hi there, On Monday, 7/3 our beloved Harry T Bonefonte was diagnosed with Immune-Mediated Thrombocytopenia, or ITP. https://www.mspca.org/angell_services/immune-mediated-thrombocytopenia-itp-in-dogs/ In short, ITP causes a dog's immune system to attack its platelets. In Harry's case, this caused him to begin to bleed into his GI Tract. While other instances of ITP in dogs have a survival rate of 80%, cases like his show a 60% survival rate, as GI bleeding allows for a much greater loss of blood than other expressions of this ailment. We've been treating at home since Monday with a combination of steroids, GI meds, antibiotics, and probiotics but his status does not seem to be improving. We've consulted with several veterinarians and all conclude that best practice in his case is to hospitalize and treat with immunosuppressants and potentially blood transfusions. To put it mildly, we do not have the resources on our own to cover the heavy fees associated with that kind of care. Knowing he would stand a good chance of surviving this disease if not for financial circumstances has been devastating, and has brought us to the point of begging for help. If you've met Harry you know he is a feisty, funny, bright light in our lives. Over the past few days, we've watched that light dim, knowing that there is another path forward if only we could afford it. We do not come to this decision lightly, and we appreciate any and all help you can provide. Thank you.
