In March of 2024, Mike Stephens developed a Staph infection that ravaged his body; after collapsing and ending up in the emergency ward of San Antonio's north, Central Baptist hospital. Emergency surgery was performed to address the damage to his spinal cord and directly treat the infection with antibiotics. After another surgery attempt, several MRIs, transfers to a nursing home and University hospital of San Antonio, Mike is left with no feeling in his lower body and limited use of arms & hands. In late July, Mike was moved to a personal care home which is providing his daily care needs including meals and such. He receives visits from his personal care physician as well as Occupational and Physical Therapists. While progress is slow, he is seeing some improvement in his hand dexterity. The personal care facility is being paid through a charitable grant arranged by University hospital. He has applied for Medicaid Disability coverage, however, that is an 8 month backlog due to Covid. The plan is that the grant will cover the facility expense until Medicaid kicks in. Long term; while Mike does hope to return to the working world someday, it is unclear when that might be, but, he is looking into a potential grant that will allow him to complete his college degree, Through it all, Mike is remaining positive as he tries to move forward, but he does need our help. This LFEBridge has been created to help Mike with day to day expenses such as Copays for Home health care / therapy visits and common day to day expenses like personal care items, etc. Please consider making a donation to help Mike along his road to recovery!
