Hi, my name is Em, and I'm an experimental filmmaker, art professor, and camp counselor. I'm fundraising to help pay emergency medical bills. In 2013 I experienced a sexual assault that over time caused a decline in my mental health and ability to care for myself. In 2024, when my mental health reached an all-time low, I was diagnosed with PTSD and hospitalized for suicidal intent. Luckily, I had health insurance that helped me pay for the majority of the costs. Unfortunately, my copay of nearly $1500 was unmanageable as I was finishing my Master's in Fine Arts. So, I put the cost out of my mind and focused on my healing and my degree. I found a wonderful therapist who helped me to integrate my healing journey with my art practice, and in 2024 I finished my thesis film, "the tender place where the world breaks", a film that aims to convey this episode of suicidality. Unfortunately, upon graduating and getting my first job as an adjunct professor of fine art, I still did not have the funds to manage these hospital expenses that gave me a second chance at living. I am aiming with this fundraiser to pay this medical debt in full, which is now part of a civil suit against me, totaling $1759. Any extra money raised will go towards paying additional debts accrued during this period of time, including student debt and credit card debt. As a thank you for the support I want to offer you the link to my MFA thesis film, "the tender place where the world breaks", complete with the Spanish subtitles that were created for an exhibition of the film in Mexico City. https://vimeo.com/689448154?share=copy I am incredibly grateful for anything you can give, but also just sharing this fundraiser would mean the world to me.
