Let’s help Dusty get back in his tractor. Lawrence Helms, known affectionately as Dusty, has been running Helms Brothers Co. with his brother Steve for 40 years and after a series of medical events, including heart surgery, colon cancer and most recently, a below-the-knee amputation in June, needs some assistance to help equip his tractor to be accessible and transition his home to be wheelchair-accessible. Additional funds raised will also help to tackle mounting medical expenses. Dusty received the horrific news that he would need a right leg amputation. In June of 2024, Dusty had surgery for a below-the-knee amputation of his right leg, due to diabetes and peripheral vascular disease. As devastating as an amputation is, Dusty, in years past has faced other major health problems. In 2015, he suffered a major heart attack requiring open heart surgery. Doctors did a work-up prior to the heart surgery revealing colon cancer and diabetes. Just three months after the heart surgery, Dusty faced an additional surgery for colon cancer followed by many months of aggressive and debilitating chemotherapy. After facing these obstacles head-on, Dusty and Steve were able to overcome the many health challenges and get back to running a successful excavation company. Dusty’s right leg amputation is life-changing and brings a whole new set of challenges. Even everyday activities now require extra time and energy for both Dusty and Steve. Modifications will be needed to help Dusty to get safely and independently into and out of his home, truck and tractor. Dusty feels best when he is operating his tractor shaping landscapes, he takes great care and pride in his work and has gained considerable skill over the years. Dusty makes operating the tractor look effortless. Dusty continues to struggle to get back to what he is passionate about, running his equipment. Mounting medical bills and loss of work and income are causing financial stress to Dusty’s recovery. In the past, Dusty and Steve have worked longer and harder to get through tough times however this is not the solution with Dusty’s ongoing health issues. The Helms family is reaching out to Dusty and Steve’s friends and business associates to rally together with us to provide them with both financial and emotional support. Please help us help them. Any and all donations and words of encouragement are appreciated. Thank you, The Helms Family
