Hello, my name is Sandro Lema and would appreciate if you’d read my brother’s tragic story. My brother, Diego Lema-Santos, was a victim of a violent assault that has left him paralyzed since May 27, 2024 and is still suffering from his injuries to this day. At the time of the events, I was away for training with the NJ National Guard for an upcoming deployment. Subsequently, I had to cut my training short and withdraw from the deployment due to the severity of my family circumstances. Diego Lema-Santos was treated at University Hospital in Newark NJ for about 2 months before his discharge. Doctors have said that he would not likely walk due to his level of injury (C-6 Spinal Cord Injury) and would need specialized care possibly for the rest of his life. However, my brother’s immigration status and lack of health insurance limits him from receiving the adequate care he needs in the country. Typically, hospitals are supposed to send patients with injuries like his to a rehabilitation center, but my brother was instead discharged straight home with minimal equipment or knowledge for the family to care for him. To add to this, my family and I hoped we’d get justice for my brother with help from local police but despite all the clues and statements we gave local police, they failed to find my brother’s attackers and have now closed his case. Since the attack, my mother and I had to make drastic changes to care for my brother. My mother had to leave her job and care for my brother 24/7 while I became the sole provider for both my mother and brother. I even switched my work schedule to night shifts so I can help my mother out with my brother’s care during the day as it can get too much for her. As you can imagine, our lives has been very challenging ever since the incident. Especially for my brother. His quality of life has changed drastically and there is no recourse for him to turn but his family. We’ve made several attempts to apply for Medicaid on his behalf, but without adjusting his immigration status, he is deemed ineligible. And to adjust his immigration status is a lengthy process in itself. All my brother’s needs are being taken care of financially by me. For example his medical transportations, medical supplies, medications, etc. All which can get very costly. My family’s biggest wish for my brother would be to get him into intensive rehab treatment to help him become more independent because as of now he is bed bound and needs complete assistance with everyday living. Mi hermano Diego Lema Santos fue víctima de una violenta agresión que lo dejó paralizado desde el 27 de mayo de 2024 y hasta el día de hoy sigue sufriendo sus heridas. En el momento de los hechos, yo estaba entrenando con la Guardia Nacional de Nueva Jersey para un próximo despliegue. Posteriormente, tuve que interrumpir mi entrenamiento y retirarme del despliegue debido a la gravedad de mis circunstancias familiares. Diego Lema-Santos fue tratado en el Hospital Universitario de Newark, Nueva Jersey, durante aproximadamente 2 meses antes de ser dado de alta. Los médicos han dicho que probablemente no caminaría debido al nivel de lesión (lesión de la médula espinal C-6) y que posiblemente necesitaría atención especializada por el resto de su vida. Sin embargo, el estatus migratorio de mi hermano y la falta de seguro médico le impiden recibir la atención adecuada que necesita en el país. Desde el ataque, mi madre y yo tuvimos que hacer cambios drásticos para cuidar de mi hermano. Mi madre tuvo que dejar su trabajo y cuidar a mi hermano las 24 horas del día, los 7 días de la semana, mientras que yo me convertí en el único sustento tanto para mi madre como para mi hermano. Incluso cambié mi horario de trabajo a turnos nocturnos para poder ayudar a mi madre con el cuidado de mi hermano durante el día, ya que puede ser demasiado para ella. Como puedes imaginar, nuestras vidas han sido muy desafiantes desde el incidente. Especialmente para mi hermano. Su calidad de vida ha cambiado drásticamente y no tiene más recurso que su familia. Hemos hecho varios intentos de solicitar Medicaid en su nombre, pero sin ajustar su estatus migratorio, se lo considera no elegible. Y ajustar su estatus migratorio es un proceso largo en sí mismo. Yo me ocupo financieramente de todas las necesidades de mi hermano. Por ejemplo sus transportes médicos, suministros médicos, medicamentos, etc. Todo lo cual puede resultar muy costoso. El mayor deseo de mi familia para mi hermano sería someterlo a un tratamiento de rehabilitación intensivo para ayudarlo a ser más independiente porque a partir de ahora está postrado en cama y necesita ayuda completa con la vida diaria.
