This is Jum. I am writing to ask for your help with Dao, my much-loved housekeeper from Myanmar. Dao has been part of my family in Thailand for more than 10 years. She has cared for my son Trym since he was a little boy and helped me to juggle work and home. She was planning to return home to Myanmar this year, but then she received devastating news. Dao was diagnosed with an aggressive kind of breast cancer. The cancer is advanced but treatable, and she is now getting chemotherapy at Siriraj Hospital in Bangkok. Once that’s done, she faces surgery and 20 more sessions of radiotherapy. Dao has lost hair and lost weight. But with the right treatment, she could enjoy many years of quality life. She is 48 years old. The timing of her diagnosis couldn't have been worse. Dao hadn't renewed her Thai government health insurance because she was due to return to Myanmar. Not only must she pay for treatment; she must also pay 25% extra, because she’s a foreigner. So far, I have been paying for most of Dao’s scans and treatment. She feels bad about this, and is thinking of seeking treatment in Myanmar instead. I don’t want her to do this. Myanmar's healthcare system is in terrible shape due to the civil war. So, I’m making this appeal to help cover the cost of Dao’s treatment here in Thailand, where she has a chance to beat her cancer. She has another four sessions of chemo, which will cost 3,000 baht ($85) per session. Then comes breast surgery, followed by 20 sessions of radiotherapy, which will cost an estimated 200,000 baht ($5,700). Any donation, no matter how small, would be a big help. Please help me save Dao’s life and get her back home. Thank you. Please note: For technical reasons, my British friend Andrew is organizing this fundraiser on my behalf.
