Our lovely friend Consuela Harper, is in a pickle. She is fighting serious health issues, including brain injury and Hypokalemic Periodic Paralysis. She had a stroke and has experienced worsening neurological and physiological problems in recent years. She is bedridden and paralyzed much of the time, using a cane and a wheelchair at other times. She cannot clean, prepare her own food or do her own grocery shopping. She has not been able to work or complete basic life functions for several years now. Consuela lost most of her stuff to a mold problem in her previous apartment, and has been without a permanent home for several months. An opportunity so amazing that it is almost miraculous has come up–a permanent spot in low-income ADA housing in East Portland! Consuela needs to move right away, but no longer has basic furniture and household items, like something to sleep on or eat with. Friends are providing her with some used items, but other basics will need to be purchased, like a bed, a mattress, a table, some shelves and a couch. Loud noises make her condition worse and cause paralysis episodes, so she will also need some curtains and rugs to reduce noise. All in all, basic furnishings will be about $3000. Movers will be needed ($500) to get her personal items to the apartment. Consuela receives 4 hours per week of caregiving through the government, but she needs much more support, even during stable times. The care is focused on assisting with basic needs, e.g., meal preparation, grocery shopping, cleaning, helping with cognitive tasks, and personal care. She anticipates needing an extra 15 hours/week of care/support for 6 weeks, during the time of moving and recovering from the move. Caregiving of this kind can be as much as $75/hour, so this could cost $4500. Our total fundraising goal is $8000. This is urgent as we get her keys today, July 11, and volunteers will start cleaning and prepping the apartment so that Consuela can move in by July 30. We would like to do this in a way that is gentle on her and does not leave her hospitalized or worse. This is a beautiful person who helped others when she was able. Can we help her out now?
