Hi, my name is John Becker, Cody's father. Cody is an 11-year-old boy and the fourth of five siblings. Cody loves camping, fishing, family, friends, and collecting sports cards. He is a very caring boy and entering 6th grade in the fall. Upon the end of the school year, Cody had planned a summer of fishing and playing with cousins and friends. On June 11th those plans were suddenly derailed. Cody was at a state park with family. He and a few other kids were on a trail with Cody bringing up the rear. He slid off the trail and fell an approx. 15'. There was a good team of people on site that immediately sprang into action and got Cody to the nearest Children's Trauma unit (fortunately only 20 minutes away). Cody's left side took the brunt of the damage with the worst being his jaw which was broken into several pieces on the left side. Cody had surgery to repair and wire his jaw but there were more than a few variables that made it difficult. The key one was that during the fall Cody lost at least 2 teeth and then 6 more were taken out during surgery. This meant that key teeth were missing for anchoring the wires that would keep the jaw straight and bite, true. All the fragments of bone could not be dealt with as this would have meant that a deep cut would have to be into Cody's neck and that was deemed not safe to do. Currently, we are hoping to be cutting the wires right before the school year starts. Then the difficult dental journey can begin. This will start with braces on what is left of Cody's teeth to get those straight so that plans can be made for the future. Cody will be missing about 10-12 permanent teeth at this point and will need to be replaced. There are more than a few variables that make it impossible to plan a concrete journey forward. There will be future surgeries on Cody's jaw but hopefully only one or two when he is approx. 18. We are all hoping for best-case scenarios to play out. How the funds will be used: 1. Currently I am missing quite a bit of work for Cody's care and doctor appts. This is causing household expenses to suffer. 2. Back to school supplies and clothes 3. Special diet and shakes for nutrition 4. Any Medical/Dental expenses not covered by insurance. We have been blessed things were not worse in this as far as not any worse head/neck/spine injuries than those sustained. Sometimes it is hard to see the positive in a negative situation but it is necessary to move forward. Cody has stayed in great spirits during this journey and it has been heartwarming to see his fight and courage. We thank you in advance for taking the time to read this story and donate.
