See you when you get here…At one point we all have had Grandma or Grandpa come and visits for a holiday or a family gathering or a new baby. Tickets are purchased and exciting plans are made for Grandparents to visit. They let us know they are at the airport and we say “OK have a good flight, see you when you get here.” We have all done it thinking the flight might be a little bumpy or the kid sitting behind them might kick them a few times in the back of the seat, but overall they will get here. They might be a little tired but nothing that a smile, a hug, a few minutes of rest won’t fix. That’s what the Azonyibo family thought.Plans for Grandpa Azonyibo to come and visit his kids and grandchildren especially his newly born two granddaughters. The youngest one was born a few months ago, Grandpa couldn’t be prouder. Grandma would have loved her, but she passed away a few years ago so girls always have a special place in grandpa’s heart. As he boarded the plane from Lomé (West Africa), his son wished him well on the phone and said “see you when you get here.” A few hours later his son received a phone call from the airline stating his father was being taken to the hospital in Chicago because he appeared to be sick. Grandpa wasn’t sick before he left; he had received all his immunizations, and had no health issues. His son thought it was just some food poisoning or fatigue. He assured his father he would be ok, to just go get checked out and he would be on the next flight out. A few hours later his son received another call from the doctors at the hospital: “You need to come tonight; your father is very sick and may not make it through the night.” Shocked, stunned, confused, angry, upset was a few of the emotions his son felt as he spoke with the doctors. Anxious, he tried getting on the next flight to Chicago but was unable to get anything till the next morning. By the time he got to him, his father had passed away in his sleep the night before. “See you when you get here” became just words, forever hanging in the air. Grandpa is now in a strange town, with strange people. He never made it home to see his beautiful granddaughters. The family needs your help to bring Grandpa home so he can rest with his family and friends in a place where he is loved. “See you when you get here” words that we all say, words that we all unquestionably believe in. Let’s bring Grandpa home, so his family can see him when he gets here.
