Our son, Alexander (AJ), is a 25 year old young man with spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy (since birth) and is completely wheelchair bound due to his inability to control his head, trunk, arms and leg movements. He can’t bear his own weight to assist with transfers out of his chair to automobile, bath or bed. He is non-verbal, but a very intelligent man who loves being a "man on the go". Because of the toll on our own bodies to meet AJ’s needs and transfers from location to location, we are mostly home bound because we don’t have a wheelchair accessible automobile. We are very limited in going to family events, doctor appointments or just being able to go to the park to enjoy the fresh air. He has outgrown all previous vehicle modifications and special builds since he's getting so tall and heavier. The psychological and physical benefits of having a wheelchair accessible van would be profound and life changing for AJ and our family. We know that with the purchase of a wheelchair van it would greatly increase the enjoyment of life for AJ by visiting family, participating in community events, comfortability while traveling to and from medical appointments. Just being able to get out of the house would greatly benefit him physically and psychologically. He graduated from Springville High School in May of 2024 just after the entire country was closed down for the Corona Virus. Since that time he has not been able to visit with his friends, travel to events or socialize with the general public (which he loves to do). Without the benefit of a wheelchair accessible van AJ can’t enjoy life to his full potential. Being confined to a wheelchair has been devastating to our family medically and economically. There are expensive medical bills, ongoing medications, expensive ambulance expenses when he needs to be transported to the hospital at UAB. Also there are significant costs to our own bodies as caregivers for AJ. Having a wheelchair van would decrease the negative affects and lessen the repetitive strain on us physically as well. We are asking for help with the funding of this van. As you can imagine, a $70,000 used vehicle is certainly not in our budget. We would be grateful of any amount that could be applied to the purchase of this van since it would help improve the health and well-being of AJ significantly. We are currently working with MobilityWorks in Birmingham AL to acquire a wheelchair accessible van for AJ's transportation. Thank you in advance for your consideration. Please know that ALL money raised goes directly to purchase the van. Even if you can't help financially, prayers are free and sharing AJ's fundraiser costs nothing.
